Not good with numbers? Trouble with reading? Writing not your thing? More than 4 million Pennsylvania adults need basic literacy skills for gainful employment and self-sufficiency. Many adults with limited literacy skills are unemployed or working in jobs with low pay. Children whose parents do not read, foster learning in the home, or value education are less likely to be successful in school. Families in which mothers have limited literacy have more health problems. our response The YWCA Adult Literacy Center is committed to providing programs with the resources and support needed to operate quality programs that lead to positive outcomes for individuals and families. Outcomes include increasing literacy levels and workplace skills, transitioning to post-secondary education, job training or employment. Adult Basic Education through individual tutoring, small learning groups, and classes are available for adults to improve their reading, writing, math, computer, workplace and English language skills. Participating 3-5 hours each week will increase the opportunity for success in earning a GED, entering community college, earning a workplace credential or gaining employment. Classes and tutoring are held at the YWCA Adult Literacy Center and area locations in the tri-county area. In most cases, there is no cost to the learner. Registration is required. programs and services Adult Literacy Center The adult literacy program provides reading, writing, math, English language, GED test preparation, workplace essential skills, U.S. citizenship test preparation, and customized on-site education for employees to businesses. The programs are available in the tri-county area. Sixty volunteer instructors work with one-on-one tutoring, in classrooms, and in small learning groups. Community supporters of the literacy program include National Penn Bank, Pottstown Rotary Club, Pottstown School District, Montgomery County Workforce Investment Board, Montgomery County Community College, Kutztown University, area police departments and Books4Less.
